Basic Research Project

 

Step One:

Discuss the elements of a research paper.

Format, Citation requirements,

 

Take the sample research paper v2 and update the research to conform to Modern MLA guidelines.

 

Step Two:

Discuss the value of Primary sources vs. secondary sources. Discuss the purpose and utilization of sources to meet written objectives.

Read excerpts from eyewitness accounts of the events discussed in the sample research paper. Note inconsistencies as well as consistencies in the account.

Note Literary style vs. factual reporting

 

Step Three

Continue research and revise and enhance each version

Take the revised sample research paper v2 and revise and enhance the work by

using material from a primary source.

Revise and enhance the research paper on the Great Fire of Chicago.

 

REVISION: improve the arguments used in the paper with evidence from the Chicago Fire website http://www.chicagohs.org/fire/

 

 

ENHANCEMENT: improve the research paper with ADDITIONAL FACTS and/or images that support the new facts or support pre-existing facts.

 

SPECIAL ATTENTION:

Use “in-text citations” for all new information.  Use proper citation format in the “Works Cited” page.

 

Step Four

Revise expression:

Discuss the power of parallel structure. Examine samples of parallel structure from Sir Francis Bacon, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy,

 

INCORPORATE PARALLEL STRUCTURE.

This is an application task.  The student will take the concept, parallel structure and apply it to the sample research paper.

Intermediate Research Project

 

Begin with the topic of WAR. 

Discuss how the British viewed entry into World War I and how as the war progressed from year to year, the sentiment changed to bitter resentment.

Examine several writers of the period. Examine texts from the library. Develop an original approach to the topic and produce a newsletter.
